(Apr 30): Quicktime rec: OMG. QT7 Codecs. Next time you are in an Apple store, march right on up to one of those G5s with the 30" Cinema Display, and select the big blue "Q" Quicktime player from the Dock. You'll be presented with a menu of movie previews on the right. It'll automatically know you're on a 30" Cinema, and begin downloading the movie preview (I chose War of the Worlds, since Fantastic Four didn't seem to work) and jump automatically to border-filling full screen high definition mode. It'll take forever, even on the Store's high speed connection, but it will be unbelievable, like looking through sun window mounted at the local IMAX. Oh btw, MacFixit has posted some bug issues with QT7 running on Panther, so take a look.
iMacs: Speaking of graphics, the iMac G5 was updated today, and they've replaced the lowly 64M Geforce FX5200 with a 128M Radeon 9600. They didn't show UT2k4 benchmarks, but Halo was reported by Apple's Performance Marketing divison to be 1.8X faster than the first gen iMac G5. I was briefly reading the tech specs, and notice the speed bump to 1.8/2.0 Ghz, and 10/100/1000 networking. There's now a 400G disk option. Firewire is still at FW400, but there are now three USB 2.0 ports and two 1.1s (instead of 1 2.0 and two 1.1s). FSB is still clocked at 1/3 CPU speed. Externally, it looks identical, although I'm sure the rear port area is a bit different... the QT VR file is still dated near the release of the first gen iMac G5, in fact (Aug 20, 2004). RAM now defaults at a more realistic 512M, with the same overall price, which is nice considering Apple's famously stratospheric RAM prices. (Thank you to Thor for the correction here). Anyways, a sweet product, finally the graphics issue is somewhat addressed (still wanted that 9700 Mobility), the speed bump is up to 2.0, and the option of 400G HD is excellent, all pushing the boundaries of the IMac concept, while keeping the price low. I wonder how noisy these will be running at CPU set to "Highest" in the Energy Saver System Preference... I'll test it out as soon as these show up at the local Apple Store!
more: eMacs have also been updated ( I haven't checked the tech specs in detail yet, but these are 1.42 Ghz G4s ), and there's a new Security Update out in your Software Update (at least for Panther).
(Apr 30): Well I still am running Jaguar. I rolled into the local Apple Store at 10pm, and if I knew they were having giveaways, I would've stood in line at 6 over and over again in hopes of getting that free powerbook =) Anyways the good news is we got one of those 10%off prizes, but the bad news is that the educational discount was not offered in the store-- I had to go online, or get it at the university bookstore Applestore. . . This limitation is very unusual, but perhaps it's because the discount is quite large (nearly half off), and they are notoriously lax in checking. Anyways maybe I'll get it today, or maybe I'll play with the camera I got at 10% off instead... Ah well. Icculus has us testing something new so at least I can test it in Jaguar =)

(Apr 6): Well the rumor sites were pretty much on target, with new PowerMacs announced today. I'll study the specs more (didn't check the whole watercooling bit, which I assume is not there), but check out those reduced prices on the cinema displays. Not cheap, but cheaper is always better. Of course Tiger comes out Friday, and there are already preview reviews, as well as Apple.com boo-boo screenshots that appeared momentarily.

(Apr 25): Tuesday Apple rumors: The rumormill is going about possible Apple updates tomorrow April 26 (Tuesday)... These include DP G5s at speeds up to 2.7 Ghz with dual-layer DVD writers. Also there are less clear indications of possible iMac or eMac updates. Read more at Appleinsider. I'm sure these hotties will be shipping with Tiger and iLife 05. I haven't really researched yet what Tiger festivities will be on Friday, but I'll drop in for a look. I still have those Night of the Panther dogtags haha. Also on Friday, Aspyr will be releasing a few new BF1942 maps via macgamefiles. Speaking of Friday, go see the Douglas Adams movie =)

Interview with Glenda Adams: Glenda is of course the director of development at Aspyr, and after all that Mac Doom 3 benchmarking we did a few weeks ago, we caught her attention, and we jumped on the opportunity to ask for an interview. Honestly, we were offered an inch and took a mile by submitting a question list as long as some encyclopedias. Glenda was gracious enough to answer most everything, and the result is really fascinating. Read the interview here at Macologist.
Tactical Ops: Crossfire renders: The new TO team has produced some new renders, you can read more about them and get links here. Also, the Troopers: Dawn of Destiny (Star Wars UT2004 mod) has not quit after all, and Yoshiro posted some new information here at their official site. Also on the UT front, the Flagpack II was released, I'm still working on making a mac installer, but you can just install the manual zip yourself, get it here. I'm also keeping an eye on a few upcoming UT mods, one is a zombie one called Killing Fields, I think some forum users found a motion blur incompatibility (renders as pure white in OpenGL, in other words on Macs), but he's gotten in touch with the dev team, who seem to be keen on fixing the issue. You can see more on the mod at their official site here. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming DA2 (Defence Alliance 2), the UT2004 successor of the popular UT mod DA. I've been told the latest IR is very very close to a publicly releasable version, and they've even gone around looking for more betatesters as they hit the home stretch. If we're lucky, DA|Abs0lut will give us a preview copy to review upon release. These guys are so close! Go to their official site and see their renders and trailer. Also, Blue Moon Rising seems to be interesting, but still a way within the dev stage.
(Apr 13): Hax0rs use blogspace: Apparently the new ubiquity of DIY blog services is a big vulnerability hackers are taking advantage of, using them to store and distribute malware-- thus it's the storage space (and identity masking) which is the key here, rather than requiring victims to visit the blog itself (although that is a vulnerability too, depending on the user). Very interesting... I haven't investigated it at all yet, and I wonder if .mac could be abused like this. I doubt it because it's a pay service which requires some type of identity authentication I think. Anyways, read more here at Information week.
(Apr 12): Tactical Ops INI correction: I made a little mistake. The short of it all is that for Tactical Ops 3.50 Mac, if you are experiencing kicks from TOST (in online multiplayer) for having too many "Fire" binds, you should download this corrected set of INI files. The medium-length answer is that you could also just edit your current file to remove all but one Fire bind, and same with altfire. The long answer is that when Petterf was preparing TO 3.50 for release, he asked me to test it in OS 9. The fire and altfire aliases had been totally redone, but even after correcting that, I couldn't fire. The problem was that fire in OS X should be bound to "leftmouse", and altfire to "rightmouse", at least by default. In OS9's UT, there is no "leftmouse" or "rightmouse"-- these should be set to "Mouse" and "Altmouse", respectively. So I set both leftmouse and mouse to fire, and both rightmouse and altmouse to Altfire. Worked fine, but I didn't test it in multiplayer with TOST, which now I know kicks players with more than one Fire bind. Anyways, in the corrected INI download above, I've made a separate TO_user.ini for OS X and OS 9, with this fix.
As an aside, why does TOST not like this? I would guess the answer is sputterfire (tapping the fire button), which has more headshots at distance than a continuous stream of automatic fire (holding down the fire button). In fact, in earlier versions of TO, you could make it sputter fire twice as fast-- by changing the fire alias. By default (in earlier versions), Alias 0 (in TO_User.ini) was set to (Command="Button bFire | Fire",Alias=Fire). In other words, there is already a single-shot Fire command, which is taken over by the automatic fire alias, which is also named Fire. Thus if you tried mouse=fire | onrelease Fire, it wouldn't work, because when you release the button, well it's not being held down which is the new meaning of the alias. You could get around this by: Aliases[0]=(Command="Button bFire | Fire",Alias=shoot). Now Fire is still a single shot, and shoot is the automatic alias. Now you could do mouse=shoot | onrelease fire. The result is that every tap on the fire button would shoot at least two individual shots (not in a stream), doubling the sputterfire rate. If you did the same on two buttons, you could probably come close to quadrupling. Anyways, if you think this sounds close to being unfair, well so does TOST. It will catch this (actually Firing is no longer Aliased the same way in 3.50 anyways) , as well as binding more than one button for firing, which is how we started this story in the first place.
(Apr 11): TO Team making UT2004 mod: Those jokers released their announcement on April 1, but apparently it's no joke. There's going to be a new UT2004 mod from the TO-Patch and TOST team members. I remember Mad Onion hinting at this to me a very long time ago, and I had long since thought the idea had fizzled, especially as the Make Something Unreal contest has come and gone through UT2003 and UT2004. The mod will be called Crossfire, you can already check out screenshots at their site! Of course our very own Petterf is on staff as the Mac expert, so we know they plan to make it work with Macs/OpenGL.
Rumormill: Apple Gaming Division? The other big rumor making the rounds at Macrumors is an anonymous tip (thus relegated to their less reliable "Page 2" rumor list) that Apple is planning an internal gaming division. This is not all that unbelievable in light of their past actions (creating iLife and iWork and Safari in-house), as well as recent developments such as a call for OpenGL engineers, as well as an OpenGL Optimizimation Technote released curiously near the Doom3 launch.
Still from the sounds of it they need more engineers working on the underpinning (opengl & drivers for ati/nvidia) rather than the toplevel game itself.
But if they are working on a game, it can't be just any game. It has to be the flagship title: The only reason to open a game division is to change the public perception of poor gaming on a Mac. Their first game will have to be a "cost-no-object (almost) riproaring flagship OMG!!111" type of game, a sort of marquee title like Doom3. Only HL2 & BF2 come to mind, and we all know the problem with those titles: middleware (Havok). Hmmmm. Would they subsidize that at a cost too tempting for the Havok people to resist? Also curious is the new involvement of some big names such as Aspyr and Epic in the Aegia Physics engine, could this chipset have the side effect of providing a way around the Physics Middleware roadblock for Macs? Hmmm. Let's stop the unsubstantiated free-association here =)
(Mar 30): Doom 3 & DP CPUs: There have been a lot of rumors flying around about gaining better performance
when disabling the second CPU in DP powermacs using CHUD tools. I'm not sure everyone making these claims has known to run the benchmarks at least twice, because the first time is always slow as it caches, but there may be something to these claims, I just don't know yet. Of course it doesn't sound right... and even if true, I still wouldn't recommend disabling that processor. Glenda (Aspyr) just wrote Rob-ART (barefeats.com), and confirmed our suspicion that like UT2004, the second processor handles audio. The catch? The timedemos have audio disabled. Therefore even in the unlikely even that disabling that 2nd processor gains a benefit in the timedemo, in all likelihood any benefit will be erased when you actually play the game with your audio enabled. There have also been claims of huge benefits using various beta Tiger builds. It seems that in some configurations, there may be small benefits, although there are some hints that the NVIDIA GF 6800 Ultra actually does worse in Tiger. Also, there may be Tiger vs. Panther differences in disabling that 2nd CPU.
If I haven't mentioned this already, if you have an ATI card, you need to use the ATI Displays control panel. If you manually disable vertical sync and anisotropy (set to "0"), you see an enormous benefit versus doing these exact same settings via the Doom console. Why? Who knows. Aspyr engineers are looking into it. But for now you may gain 130-180% of your original performance at 800x600 and 1024x768, which is just stunning.
My take? This will all be sorted out soon. Glenda is aware of these claims. NVIDIA & ATI as well as Apple probably consider Doom3 to be the benchmark of choice, at least in the game arena. There are new Doom, OpenGL, and driver patches on the way, as well as Tiger. It'll only get better.
AA: Oh, BTW Ryan finally released the new Mac version of America's Army. I played it for the first time while testing it this round, and it's really worth taking a look at. He even found a way around the Gamespy MP server browser issue. Ryan really deserves a lot of credit.
Verizon: My DSL had more burps yesterday... couldn't tell if I was being DOS'd, or whether the Verizon DNS server went down yet again. Yes, I didn't mention that, their email randomly goes down for a full day several times a year. The entire connection itself even goes down perhaps once every three months for a full day or more (Yes, I fully get the 169.254.x.x IP). And a few times, the DNS server just stopped functioning. Too bad I don't already use cable TV, else I'd hop on Roadrunner in a second. Darned bundled long distance + DSL has me trapped, just as intended.
(Mar 24): Verizon rant: What is up with Verizon Internet? I am so disappointed in so many ways, let me count them. 1) First of all, their mail servers seem to be rejecting half of Europe. Forum registrations on forum servers based in Europe get bounced, and it's not the spam filter. Just Google email problem with "@verizon.net" addresses in Europe. Yes, that meant I couldn't receive email from osxgamefiles and macologist. Did that make admining those websites inconvenient? Take a wild guess. 2) Oh speaking of spam filters, and the spam filter has always been broken-- the user cannot shut it off. Yes there is a setting to turn it off via your web-based controls, but it doesn't work. I've actually had to go into the supposedly-disabled spam filter's ALLOW function, to have it always pass certain email addresses. . . of course instead of individual addresses, I'm putting top level domains: Allow *.edu, Allow *.com, Allow *.org, *.net, *.uk, *.nl, *.jp, and so on. If I've forgotten a domain I'll never know it. =\ These two points necessitated using gmail accounts via POP. In fact I should just set my verizon to forward to my gmail account, and just retrieve from there. 3) DNS doesn't work for many european-based site domains. Megatokyo.com was a big one. The site just thought it was random lame visitors, except they started to notice a pattern that ALL of the complaints had @verizon.net email addresses. After nearly half a year, they resolved it, but who knows what other sites are simply blocked? Utterly incompetent that it required four trouble tickets. 4) I didn't even mention the DSL downtime, at least a full day every two months on average. 5) Bait & switch: they promised a ton of optionally expanded personal web space, but the system was broken for much of last year. I kept checking back every month, then gave up. I thought to try again late last year, and you know what? It's not longer provided. I'm sure it was grandfathered in from the previous users, which must be a very small user base considering how briefly it was open.
Why am I paying them for such a cruddy ADSL residential upload speed anyways, I need my upload for Macologist. I suppose it's price: my bundled telephone plan makes it much cheaper than getting Cable Roadrunner, especially because I don't watch cable televison. I'm almost willing to pay that much more though...

Don't get me started on my powerlogix ordeal, rant mode is off. I had hoped it to be over by now. I'll give them another month in hopes of a happy ending and wonderful Doom 3 benchmarks on my Cube, because I genuinely love OWC.
(Mar 24): Doom update: With the help of Rogue & Adamward from Macologist, and Rob-ART Morgan of benchmarking site barefeats.com, I've posted a followup piece to our original Doom3 review. It's entitled: Doom 3 Introspective: Mac Performance Followup. The bottom line is that mid range macs are surprisingly apt at playing D3 in a completely fulfilling manner, and we list all manner of benchmarks from the fastest DP 2.5 G5 X800/6800U, down to a 500Mhz Cube with a 9000pro, and we're continuing to add results as we go along. It was really funny, Glenda Adams dropped me an email today (no this never happens) saying, "Wow! I just had to send you guys a note to say that is the most well written, exhaustive, and intelligent set of benchmarking I've ever seen on any game on any platform. It was an amazing job, and I think you nailed all of the aspects behind Doom 3 performance better than anyone else who's tried to analyze it." If that's not an endorsement I don't know what is 8). That reminds me, I'm falling behind on my Chessmaster 9000 review.
Enemy Territory: Quick history lesson, RTCW was very popular, especially in its multiplayer, and Splash Damage created an expansion called Enemy Territory-- the devs had high hopes of having really ultra advanced AI so that offline players could enjoy a simulated online experience. However, those plans never panned out becuase of the technicalities regarding the AI - it couldn't happen. So they canned it and made it a muliti-player only game and released it on the net for free... for PC users only. 2 years ago coder Brad Oliver said to SD that he would port it for free if SD would let him look at the source code, they declined his "offer" and subsequently it's been a free and regularly updated popular MP game until now... Recently Oliver had some news: "Timothee Bessett at id and Dan Hollis (of the ETPro mod team) got in touch with me around mid-to-late December to see if I was still interested, so around mid-to-late January, I was able to finally get going on it." Yes, he has released it, read more at IMG. Now for the Macologist connection: One of our staff (a former tester for ET) will be working with Oliver to bring you the True Combat Elite launcher and installer. I'm so embarassed he'll be looking at my amateur applescript code, bu tthe end result will be good (^-^)>*
iMac cases: One of the reasons the iMac G5 appealed to me was its semi-portability and bluetooth. It isn't a laptop, but I could sure imagine moving it if I needed to, and much easier than a tower + monitor + cables. I do this all the time from room to room, but haven't brought it out yet, the foot is not easily detachable (need to really take it to pieces), so that makes it cumbersome. Well, now my problems are solved... go see the iLugger at OWC. It really is better than it seems at first sight, and that's a lot, so it's great.
(Mar 15): Tactical Ops 3.50 released for Mac: I've been doing a bit of last second OS 9 testing for Petterf, who is the Mac member of the TO Patch Team (and the TOST team). I found only minor issues like OS X's leftmouse & rihgtmouse are mouse & altmouse in OS9, found a bad screenflash setting, and odd filetype/creator on the INI files, but after that it looked OK, so he's gone ahead and made the installers for OS 9 and OS X. These are patch update installers, so you will need a full working version of TO 3.40 to use this successfully. As a reminder for those of you who don't know, TO 3.40 is based on UT99 (not UT2004), and on Mac must be done via a dedicated mod-- in other words after installing TO 3.40, your UT is no longer playable, so keep a separate installation of UT just for TO. Doom and Apocalypse: Well as you should know, Doom3 was released for Mac on Monday the 14th so get your copy now. Are you scurred that your machine won't run it? Never fear, we've been really hard at work in a collaboration between Macologist & Barefeats to bring you comprehensive benchmarks from middling G4s to the fastest G5s, with graphics cards ranging from X800XT & GF6800 Ultra down to FX5200 and Radeon 9000. We'll have the benchmarks up at Macologist hopefully by Friday or Saturday with a full workup and a whole slew of goodies (^0^)>* As a teaser, I will just say that lowish marks on the benchmark (timdemo1) don't necessarily paint the full picture, and you can have a totally scary and satisfactory playing experience even with fps ranging below 20 fps, and we've figured out ways it'll actually play well. If you only have 256M RAM, you'd better go out and buy some more though, or you'll have constant and intolerable stuttering. Anyways as a preview if you haven't seen Rob-ART Morgan's high-end benchmarks at Barefeats, go see them now, he compares the fastest Mac rigs with the fastest PC rigs at the 1600x1200 maximum. He even has a very interesting mini interview with Aspyr's Glenda Adams. For reaction, check out threads at arstechnica, macrumors and IMG. I'm not sure whether to trust those "armchair porters", but it's certainly interesting. Oh, and about the Apocalypse, of course I mean Apocalypse Weekend for Postal 2. Ever wonders what happens after you forget your Rocky Road? It seems it'll be a zombie slasher gorefest, rather than an introspective choose-your-own-level-of-violence game, but according to Ryan Gordon's .plan, it's coming for OS X in some form or another. He said that about Postal 1 too, and I haven't seen it distributed, even though we tested it (it didn't fit on the P2:STP retail mac disk). Anyways go look at his .plan, he has a screenshot link too. You know, the PC guys have been waiting for this too, they don't even have it yet, it's been delayed again and again, and currently is slated for April 2005 in North America. For some reason it's been released in Japan and Russia months ago, so the gopostal forums have been awash with Russian Mafia/Japanese Yakuza conspiracy theories. Yeah right. But it is odd.
(Mar 8): Barefeats meets Doom: Rob-ART Morgan of barefeats.com was just telling me that an addressing problem may have delayed his review copy of Doom 3 from Aspyr, but that he received it today, and he's been hard at work today churning out results. We (Macologist) have been trying to help him the best we can, but this guy is a machine! We dug up a lot of information for him (some Windows & Linux numbers, quotes from id & Aspyr, INI tweaks) to try to help him out, and in return he's going to do some benchmarks at our settings later. He's already poring through all of the options to see where tweaks can be had, and we all want to give Mac gamers ideas on realistic ways to tweak framerates. I also learned that our good friend m4k-Slug from France has a review copy for a print gaming magazine he works for, so I'll have to bug him about his rig & helping us too. I'll post the links soon, and hopefully we'll have the results from all around very soon.
UPDATE: Rob-ART has provided us with GF 6800Ultra numbers at our settings, and we have added them to the Macologist review. We'll hopefully get X800xt results soon, to see if the x800 is at a disadvantage (even the 6800GT outperforms it, not to mention the 6800 Ultra), as it is on PC. We're working on an update piece so stay tuned.
(Mar 7): Unreal update: Ryan just updated his .plan, and he mentioned something discouraging about UTPG: " There's just no way around it...the UnrealEngine1 renderer totally blows on modern hardware. This really needs a rewrite before we're done. :/" Hopefully we'll get a clarification of some sort soon. It's heartening to know he's been looking at it recently, although the Bugzilla listings are still untouched. On the other hand, he said something very intriguing about OpenAL, for those of you waiting with a non-crashing way to use surround sound and VoIP in UT2004-- this would be in the form of a new openal.dylib file... If I'm interpreting him correctly, this means it may all be fixed with Tiger, but I'm not sure. I'll ask him I think... Anyways he writes: " Working on the 1.1 spec. Also tossing around the idea of doing a new implementation from scratch...al_osx taught me a lot about how to structure this, and I have a lot of ideas about what I'd do differently if I had to do it again from scratch. Apple definitely seems to have the MacOS side of things covered, but there's some other Unixes and such I'd like to tackle with this, if I ever get around to it. As for my al_osx code tree, it's mostly a historical relic at this point, but it'll stick around on life support for awhile for things that need a tiny version until Tiger ships, like we did with this crop of Unreal titles and Feeding Frenzy and such."
Random: I saw a bit of a depressing piece at Mac360. I didn't really check closely to see if it was a joke article, b/c she does post those, but I think this one is real. It was all about what the "typical" Windows users might think about getting a Mac Mini, with all of the lack of information out there. For example: “iMovie - From what the name says, I’m guessing this is a movie player? Microsoft calls that “Windows Media Player.” It’s been around for years.” It's almost too perfect to be real. *sigh*
Doom 3: I figured I'd write more on our piece. First of all, congratulations to my staff, the reviewer Adam Ward, and the primary editing by R0gue, to get this review out within days of receiving the title in the mail. He did a fantastic job, he knows the history of the game, and has a power windows rig as well, so he has a good perspective. This PC rig he used was an impressive one, or else we'd get fanboy complaints to no end about how we handicapped Windows to make Macs look gold. If you want realistic FPS numbers from lower-end Windows machines, Andandtech has a great review comparing gfx cards and CPUs, from high to low end, and of course MacWorld had the first piece with an X800xt in a G5. It's worth noting that this is the first retail release, and history has shown that Aspyr is likely to continue working on optimizing the framerate in future patches. In fact, they were working hard, and even left 5.1 support out until the first patch which will hopefully coincide with the first true budget 5.1 system from Griffin. Also, as Adam related to me today, id Software had about 5 years to optimize code, whereas Aspyr had about 4 months. Come one, they've done a fantastic job, we have the game don't we? I also wonder if Tiger will bring benefits. Anyways, I was also talking with Rob-ART Morgan of barefeats.com recently, and hopefully we'll have some more results and different types of tests coming your way this month. Oh yeah, and I gotta go to the store next week to get my copy, b/c that's a perk that my reviewer got, and not me-- he deserves it. (^-^)>*
(Mar 5): Doom 3 Review: I just finished editing our Doom3 review, so go read it now. It's being released Mar. 14th, so it's not long now. Imagine that I don't have the game either, it went to one of my talented review staff instead, so I'll be in the stores next week too! Anyways, the great thing is that our reviewer, Adamward, tested the game on a wide variety of systems, so you can easily estimate how your rig would fare. We used:
